Foundation

The National Forestry Mycological Herbarium (NZFRI-M) is maintained by the Forest Biosecurity and Protection Group at Ensis. Accessions date back to the early days of the New Zealand Forest Service in the 1920s and 30s. 

 

Status

Crown Research Institute 

 

Functions

 The herbarium supports both commercial and public good funded research, and diagnostic service to government, industry and the general public. 

 

Scope and Size of Collections

The herbarium contains approximately 4450 (including 18 holotypes) collections of pathogenic and saprophytic (particularly wood decaying) fungi (and a few algae and lichens) from temperate New Zealand native forests, exotic plantations and urban amenity plantings. There is also a small collection of pathogenic fungi from western North America. 

 

Computerisation

 The collection is currently being catalogued in an ACCESS database.

 

Ancillary Collections

 The National Forestry Mycological Herbarium Culture Collection (NZFS) holds approximately 1600 isolates of a similar range of fungi as the herbarium.
