Functions

To provide a herbarium record of the Botanic Gardens living plant collections and to extend the herbarium to represent both Canterbury’s native flora and New Zealand native cultivars.  To support plant identification, research and teaching.

Scope of Collections

c. 1905 – 1980’s comprising largely of New Zealand native cultivars and exotic cultivars.

c. 8000 specimens

Important collections

The Armstrong Herbarium c. 1862–1926 with 2607 specimens largely from the Canterbury Province.  Although bequeathed to the Botanic Gardens, the collection is on long term loan at the Allan Herbarium, Landcare Research.
